S T O R Y
One of my favourite things is getting to catch up with people I’ve worked with in the past, and hearing just what’s going on for them. I love it when learning that we did together has had a real impact on the trajectory of their life.
Recently I got to catch up with Kelly - in fact, I was asked to interview her at a conference so she could tell her story. I loved the reflections she made and think they’re useful for us all to be reminded of.
Kelly had been part of a development programme a few years back, and with my help she had really got to know herself. She had the time and space to really understand her talents, her unique contribution, why this was brilliant and why it was needed. One of the things we did together was work on a summary of who she was at her best, using specific language, interesting depth and avoiding vague catch-all phrases. No more ‘team player-problem solver-communicator’ - Kelly was going to be specific and targeted about HOW she was a team player - HOW she best problem solves, HOW she communicates with others.
Armed with this, and fast forward a couple of years, Kelly is now in her dream job. She’s got a sizeable promotion (that’s not the goal here, but it’s a better fit job for who she is and her capability) and loves what she does because she gets to use her strengths every single day. And if you get to do that, everybody wins.
L E A R N I N G
- You have a unique contribution to make
- The data suggests you can do things better than at least 10,000 others
- Generic chat about who we are isn’t compelling for anyone to listen to!
- Our confidence grows as we learn more about what we do best, and how we do it
A C T I O N
- Get specific about what you do, and HOW you do it
- Try and come up with some I am statements that include an adjective and a noun to describe what you do - e.g. AGILE problem solver or DETAILED problem solver or CONTEMPLATIVE problem solver or COLLABORATIVE problem solver - each of these give a much more nuanced response
- If you are really unsure as to where to start with this - get yourself on the purpose pursuit wait list. We spend an entire module looking at this and I push you to write a really brilliant personal brand statement by the end of it.
So, as you go about your today today be reminded of this. You do things that nobody else can do - because you do them in a way that leans into your unique strengths, your unique talents, your view of the world. We need this, and we need you to shout about it!
